Key takeaways
- A good reply to a positive review has three parts: thank the reviewer, echo one specific detail from what they wrote, and sign off with your first name. Two to four sentences is plenty.
- Health, legal and financial practices should reply without confirming the reviewer is a patient or client, so the detail they echo is about the team, never the care or the case.
- When a reviewer names an employee, thank that person by first name. Google's policy says businesses shouldn't request specific content in reviews, so never ask customers to name staff.
- Leave deals, prices and stuffed keywords out of replies. Google's tips say not to use replies for promotions, and its local ranking page says nothing about keywords in replies.

A five-star review comes in and it feels great. Then you open the reply box and type "Thanks so much" for the fortieth time. This guide shows you how to respond to positive reviews in a couple of minutes each, with replies that sound like you and read well on a phone.
You'll get a three-step formula, more than 40 example replies sorted by type of business, and what to do when a reviewer names an employee, mentions their health or has been coming to you for years. For the rough ones, use our guide on how to respond to negative reviews.
Why reply to good reviews at all
On Google, the person who wrote the review is notified when you reply. Yelp's tips for business owners put it plainly: if a customer complimented you in person, you'd thank them.
The bigger audience is everyone deciding whether to call you. A homeowner comparing three electricians skims the replies too, and a row of identical "Thanks for your business" lines tells them nobody is reading. Google's page on improving your local ranking says replying shows you value customers' feedback, and that positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out.

How to respond to positive reviews: the three-step formula
Thank the reviewer by first name, echo one specific detail from their review, and sign off with your own first name. Keep it to two to four sentences, add nothing private, and write each reply fresh. Health, legal and financial practices change the second step so the reply never confirms a client relationship, as shown below.
- 1
Thank them
Use their first name and say thank you. One short sentence.
- 2
Echo one detail
The person, the job, the dish, the timing. It proves you read the review.
- 3
Sign like a person
A warm close and your first name and role. Google shows replies as coming from the business.
The detail is what makes a reply worth reading. Google's tips for replying to reviews suggest mentioning a detail that reinforces the customer's visit and invites them back, and Yelp asks owners to use the reviewer's first name and at least one detail from the review. Here's a made-up review for a made-up dog groomer, and the owner's reply taken apart.
Nadia B.
GoogleOur rescue terrier Moose hates being handled. Keisha took it slow, gave him breaks and sent us a photo halfway through. He came home fluffy and calm.
- 1
Thank you, Nadia.
Thank them
First name, then thanks.
- 2
Moose was a gentleman once he trusted Keisha, and she sends that halfway photo for every nervous dog.
Echo one detail

How long a reply should be on a phone screen
Picture your reply on a phone screen, squeezed between two other reviews. Google's tips say to keep replies brief because readers may stop before they reach your point. Put the thanks and the detail in the first sentence and stop by the fourth.
Before
Hi Nadia!! Thank you SO much for taking time out of your busy day to leave us this wonderful review. We truly appreciate each and every one of our customers here at Muddy Paws Grooming...
After
Thank you, Nadia. Moose was a gentleman once he trusted Keisha. See you both in six weeks. Tasha, owner

Positive review response examples by business
Every review, name and business below is made up. Each group has one full example and three short replies to copy. Swap the bracketed parts for details from the real review.
Details worth echoing
- The staff member's first name
- The problem you fixed
- How fast you got there
- The cleanup
- The dish or drink
- The occasion
- The pet's name
- The class or coach
- A clear explanation
Plumbers and HVAC companies
Echo the fix and the tech the reviewer named. Leave out the address and the bill.
Denise R.
GoogleWater heater died on a Sunday. Rafael was here by noon, explained the options with no pressure and cleaned up after himself.
Reply from Copper Line Plumbing
Denise, thank you. A dead water heater on a Sunday ruins a weekend, and I'm glad Rafael got you sorted the same day. I'll make sure he sees this. Gina, owner
More replies: plumbing and HVAC
Thanks, [First name]. No heat in [January] is miserable, and I'm glad [tech's first name] got the furnace going the same day. [Your first name], owner
[First name], thank you for mentioning the shoe covers and the cleanup. Our techs treat every house like their own. [Your first name], [Business name]
Thank you, [First name]. A second opinion that saved you a replacement is our favorite kind of job. Call us any time the [water heater] acts up. [Your first name], owner
Roofers
Roofing reviews mention the crew, the cleanup and how the house looked afterward. Echo the part they noticed.
Glenn T.
GoogleNew roof in two days. The crew tarped my garden beds first and ran a magnet over the lawn after. Not one nail in the driveway.
Reply from High Plains Roofing
Glenn, thank you for noticing the tarps over the garden beds. Most people never see that part of the job, and Hector's crew takes pride in it. Enjoy the new roof. Mark, owner
More replies: roofing
Thanks, [First name]. Patching your roof before [the storm] was a race, and I'm glad the crew beat the rain. [Your first name], owner
[First name], thank you for the kind words about [crew lead's first name] and the team. Two days of hammering is a lot to live with, and we appreciate your patience. [Your first name], [Business name]
Thank you, [First name]. Good to hear the inspection report was easy to follow. Clear photos and plain words are the goal on every roof. [Your first name], owner
Dentists and chiropractors
Health practices change step two. Echo something about your team or how you work, never the treatment, the visit or the provider the reviewer saw. Many practices also leave the reviewer's name out, because a greeting by name followed by anything about care ties that person to the practice.
Monica F.
GoogleI've been terrified of the dentist my whole life. Dr. Okafor talked me through every step of my crown and I barely felt a thing.
Reply from Lakeview Family Dental
Thank you for taking the time to write this. Kind words like these mean a great deal to our whole team, and we'll be sure to share them. We work hard to make our office a calm place for everyone. The team at Lakeview Family Dental

We're grateful you took the time to share this. Making our office a welcoming place matters to everyone here. [Practice name]
Thank you for this lovely review. Notes like this make our team's week. [Your first name], practice manager
Vets and animal hospitals
Echo the pet's name if the reviewer used it, and leave out diagnoses and procedures even when they describe them. Keep one gentle reply ready for reviews written after a pet has died.
Owen P.
GoogleFirst visit with our senior cat Pepper. Everyone was patient with her hissing, and Dr. Anna explained everything in plain English.
Reply from Cedar Hollow Animal Hospital
Owen, thank you. Pepper sounds like a cat with opinions, and the team enjoyed meeting her. I'll pass your note on to Dr. Anna and the front desk. Lisa, practice manager
More replies: vets
Thank you, [First name]. [Pet's name] was a star, and our team loved the visit. See you both at the next checkup. [Your first name], [Clinic name]
[First name], thank you for writing this. We're so sorry about [pet's name], and grateful you let us be there with you both at the end. [Your first name] and the team at [Clinic name]
Thanks, [First name]. Late-night visits are stressful, and it means a lot that the waiting room felt calm. [Your first name], [Clinic name]
Salons and barbers
Name the stylist or barber by first name and echo the cut, the color or the feeling. Don't add anything they didn't say about their hair or why they came in.
Aaliyah J.
GoogleBrought in a photo of a cut I'd been scared to try for years. Bri talked me through what would work with my curls and I left obsessed.
Reply from Studio Nine Salon
Aaliyah, thank you. Trying a cut you've wanted for years takes courage, and Bri was thrilled it turned out the way you hoped. See you next time. Joy, owner

Auto repair shops
Customers praise honesty, clear explanations and speed. Echo the repair or the vehicle. The invoice stays out of it.
Ray S.
GoogleAnother shop said I needed a new transmission. Tomas found a bad sensor, showed me the old part and had my truck back that afternoon.
Reply from Northgate Auto Repair
Ray, thank you. Showing customers the old part is a habit Tomas swears by, and I'm glad your truck was back on the road the same day. Carla, owner

Thank you, [First name]. We'd rather tell you the [brakes] have life left than sell you parts you don't need. [Your first name], owner
Restaurants and cafes
Echo the dish, the drink, the occasion or the server's first name. Mentioning a dish they haven't tried is a fine invitation back. A coupon code is a promotion, and Google's tips say to keep those out of replies.
Hana K.
YelpBest cardamom bun I've had outside of Stockholm. Sat by the window for an hour and nobody rushed me. My new Saturday spot.
Reply from Little Fig Cafe
Hana, thank you. The cardamom buns are our baker's pride, and she's going to love the Stockholm comparison. The window seat is yours any Saturday. Theo, owner

Thank you, [First name]. A quick lunch that still feels like a real meal is exactly the goal. See you next [Tuesday]. [Your first name], [Cafe name]
Gyms and fitness studios
Echo the class, the coach or the atmosphere. Leave out weight, injuries and medical conditions, even when the reviewer brings them up. A comment about someone's body can land badly in public.
Marcus L.
GoogleJoined after years of not exercising. Coach Dani's 6 a.m. class is why I keep showing up. Down two belt notches and I like mornings now.
Reply from Iron Oak Fitness
Marcus, thank you. The 6 a.m. crew is a special group, and Coach Dani will be thrilled she's part of the reason you keep coming back. See you tomorrow. Steph, owner

Real estate agents
Congratulate them and echo what they praised: the communication, the negotiation, the patience. Leave out the address, the price, the lender and their finances, even if the reviewer shared them.
Priscilla M.
GoogleFirst-time buyers who knew nothing. Dana answered every text, even at 10 p.m., and talked us out of a house with foundation problems. We close next week.
Reply from Harbor Point Realty
Priscilla, congratulations on your first home. Walking away from the wrong house was the hard part, and you two did it. Enjoy settling in. Dana

Thanks, [First name]. Buying in [town] without seeing the house in person takes trust, and I'm glad the video tours helped. Welcome to the neighborhood. [Your first name]
Accountants and lawyers
Lawyers, accountants and financial advisers usually have confidentiality rules of their own, so check with your state bar or licensing board before replying to clients in public. The safe default is the health practice approach: thank them, credit the team and confirm nothing about the matter.
A. Wilson
GoogleThree years of unfiled returns and I was too embarrassed to call anyone. Grace never made me feel judged and sorted out the whole mess.

When a review names an employee
Thank the person by first name, say you'll pass the review on, and then do it. Use first names only, even when the reviewer wrote someone's full name.
Before
Thanks for the kind words about Jake Morrison, our senior technician. Jake has worked out of our Elm Street location since 2015 and is in Monday to Thursday.
After
Thanks for the kind words about Jake, Sofia. I'll make sure he sees this. Ben, owner
The first reply hands out an employee's full name and schedule. The second gives the reviewer the same warmth.
The thing to avoid happens before the review: asking customers to mention staff. Google's policy on prohibited and restricted content says merchants shouldn't request that specific content be included in reviews, and counts asking staff to solicit reviews with content that identifies a staff member as rating manipulation. So no "please mention Jake" on the receipt, and no bonus for the employee named most often. The same policy covers conflicts of interest, including current or former employment, which is why employees shouldn't review your business. Our guide to Google's review policy covers the rest.
Replies that thank a named employee
Thank you, [First name]. [Employee's first name] is going to be thrilled to read this, and I'll make sure the whole team hears it. [Your first name], owner
[First name], thanks for calling out [employee's first name]. [Employee's first name] has been with us for [three years], and it's great to hear the care shows. [Your first name], [Business name]
Thank you for the kind words about [employee's first name] and [second employee's first name]. This one got a round of applause at our Monday meeting. [Your first name], owner
Long reviews, one-liners and repeat customers
The formula stays the same. What changes is how much of the review you pick up.
Pick one or two details
A long, glowing review
Pick the detail they spent the most words on, add one more, and stop at four sentences.
"Rosa, thank you for writing all of this. Kenji staying late to finish the tile before Thanksgiving made the crew's week. Enjoy the new kitchen. Paul, owner"
Match their length
A one-liner
"Great service, fast." gets a short reply that picks up their one word.
"Thanks, Lee. Fast is the goal, and we're glad we hit it. Ana, Bright Spin Laundry"
One line
Stars and no words
There's nothing to echo, so thank them and stop.
"Thank you for the five stars. We're glad you stopped in. Kim, Corner Key Hardware"
Ratings with no text have their own guide: how to respond to a Google review with no comment. Four-star reviews with a small gripe are covered in how to respond to a 3-star review (and a 4-star one).
Replying to repeat customers
Show a regular you know them, using only what they wrote. Your records may say it's their twentieth visit, but repeating that in public can feel like being watched.
Replies for regulars
[First name], [ten years] of [oil changes] with us. Thank you for sticking around, and for finally putting it in writing. [Your first name], owner
Thanks, [First name]. Seeing familiar faces [every Friday] is one of the best parts of running this place. Your table's waiting. [Your first name], [Restaurant name]
Thank you, [First name]. We've loved watching [dog's name] grow up, from puppy trims to full grooms. [Your first name], [Grooming shop name]
When a customer updates a bad review after you fixed the problem, thank them for the second chance and the update.
Beth A.
GoogleUpdating my review. The first visit missed a leak, but the owner came out himself the next day and fixed it. That's how you keep a customer.
Reply from Clearwater Pool Service
Beth, thank you for updating this, and for giving us the chance to put it right. A missed leak was on us, and I'm glad it's fixed for good. Rick, owner
How to reply to lots of reviews without pasting the same text
Google's tips warn against sending the same generic thank-you to everyone, and readers notice ten identical replies in a row. Keep a small bank of openers and sign-offs to rotate, and write the middle sentence fresh from the review in front of you. Write that sentence first, then wrap it.
| Opener (rotate) | Middle (always fresh) | Sign-off (rotate) |
|---|---|---|
| Thank you, [First name]. | The detail they mentioned | See you next time. |
| [First name], this made our day. | Who helped them, by first name | Enjoy the [new roof]. |
| Thanks for writing this, [First name]. | The problem you solved | I'll pass this on to [name]. |
| What a kind review, [First name]. | The occasion or the timing | We're here whenever you need us. |
A routine keeps the pile small. Here's one way to fit replies into a week.
Monday
Reply to the weekend's reviews, negative and mixed ones first.
Wednesday
Reply to anything new. Send any review that names a staff member to that person.
Friday
Clear the rest, then read your last ten replies in a row. If two start the same way, rewrite one.
Once a month
Add lines you liked to your bank and drop the ones you've overused.
If several people reply for the business, agree on one sign-off style (first name and role) so the replies sound like one company with real people in it.
Myth check: should you stuff keywords into replies?
Some guides say to work your city and service names into every reply to help your ranking, without pointing to anything Google has said. Google's page on how local ranking works says more reviews and positive ratings can help your local ranking. It says nothing about keywords in replies. A stuffed reply does read like an ad, and Google's reply tips ask for replies that are clear, helpful and brief.
Before
Thank you for choosing Copper Line Plumbing, the best emergency plumber in Springfield. We offer water heater repair Springfield, drain cleaning Springfield and same-day plumbing Springfield and Shelbyville.
After
Thanks, Denise. Glad Rafael got your water heater going the same day. Gina, owner
The second reply still says water heater, because Denise did. That's how a service word belongs in a reply.
Put the effort into getting more honest reviews instead. Do Google reviews help SEO? goes through what Google actually says.
How to respond to good reviews on Google and Yelp
On Google, you need a verified Business Profile. Google's help page on managing reviews says to open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Reply. Replies are checked against Google's content policies first, which usually takes up to 10 minutes and sometimes up to 30 days. The reply shows under the business name, so sign it, and you can edit or delete it later. More in how to reply to Google reviews.
On Yelp, you need a claimed page with an approved profile photo and business account name, per its help article on responding to reviews. You can post a public response, send a direct message, or, on a four or five star review, use the Thank button, which sends a thank-you only the reviewer sees. Yelp's tips suggest a personalized public comment, a direct message if you don't have time, and the Thank button when you're in a pinch.
| What | Yelp | |
|---|---|---|
| Before you can reply | A verified Business Profile | A claimed page, approved photo and account name |
| Public reply | Under the review, shown as the business | Public response under the review |
| Private thank-you | Not part of Google's reply steps | Thank button on four and five star reviews |
| Asking for reviews | Allowed if you ask everyone the same way and offer nothing | Yelp says businesses shouldn't ask |
That last row matters in replies. Yelp's guidance for business owners says not to ask anyone for reviews, so a Yelp reply shouldn't end with "tell your friends to review us too." More in how to respond to Yelp reviews.
Common mistakes when replying to positive reviews
Do
- Use the reviewer's first name (unless you run a health, legal or financial practice)
- Echo one thing they actually said
- Thank staff by first name when the reviewer names them
- Keep it to two to four sentences
- Reply to good reviews as steadily as bad ones
Avoid
- Paste the same thank-you under every review
- Add a coupon, a deal or a pitch for another service
- Mention prices, addresses, health details or staff surnames
- Pack the reply with city names and keywords
- Ask customers to mention a staff member in future reviews
The coupon in the reply is the most common slip. "Here's a discount on your next visit" looks generous, but Google's tips say reviewers are already customers and replies aren't the place for deals. Readers also notice which reviews get answers, so reply to the hard ones too, using our guide to negative reviews.
A positive review response template and checklist
Template: reply to a positive review
Thank you, [First name]. [One sentence that picks up a detail from their review: the person, the job, the dish, the timing.] [Optional short close, such as See you next time.]

Where Reputation Beam fits
Reputation Beam puts your Google and Yelp reviews together in one feed in its dashboard, so new reviews don't sit unanswered on one site while you're busy on the other. Yelp reviews show there read-only, so you reply to those on Yelp, where the Thank button lives. To get more reviews to reply to, Reputation Beam sends review requests by text message and email from the dashboard, each with its own link that expires after 72 hours, and every plan starts with a 14-day trial.
Google reviews can be answered from the Reputation Beam feed.
Keep going
If the next review in your feed is a tough one, how to respond to negative reviews has a four-part reply and worked examples. To keep good reviews coming from every customer, start with how to ask customers for reviews, and read texting customers for reviews before you send requests by text. Once the good reviews pile up, using customer reviews in marketing shows how to put them to work.
Questions people ask
Should you respond to every positive review?
Yes, whenever you can make each reply specific. Google says replying shows you value customers' feedback, and Yelp's tips for owners recommend responding to every review, positive and critical. On Yelp, when you're short on time, the Thank button sends a private thank-you for a four or five star review.
How do you respond to a 5-star review on Google?
Open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Reply. Thank the reviewer by first name, mention one detail from what they wrote and sign with your own first name. Google notifies the reviewer when you reply, after checking the reply against its content policies. Keep it brief and leave out deals.
What do you say when a customer mentions an employee in a review?
Thank the employee by first name, say you'll pass the review on, then show it to them. Leave out surnames. Don't ask customers to mention staff in the first place: Google's policy says businesses shouldn't request specific content in reviews, including content that identifies a staff member.
Should I put keywords in my review responses for SEO?
There's no reason to. Google's page on local ranking says more reviews and positive ratings can help your ranking, and says nothing about keywords in replies. Naming the service the reviewer mentioned is natural, but a reply packed with city names reads like an ad, and Google's tips ask for clear, brief replies.
Can a dentist reply to a positive Google review?
Yes, as long as the reply doesn't confirm the reviewer is a patient. Mentioning the treatment, the dentist they saw or their visit can disclose patient information, and HHS has acted against dental practices over review replies. Thank them and say you'll share their words with the team. This is general information, not legal advice.
How long should a reply to a positive review be?
A good rule of thumb is two to four sentences, roughly 25 to 60 words. Google's tips say to keep replies brief because readers may stop before they reach your point. A long, detailed review earns one extra sentence, never a paragraph. Put the thanks and the detail first.
Is it okay to use templates for review responses?
Yes, as a starting point. Google's tips warn against sending the same thank-you to everyone, and Yelp suggests using the reviewer's first name and at least one detail from their review. Rotate a bank of openers and sign-offs, and write the middle sentence fresh every time.
